Completed STEM Project with EP1 Red at VCIS (2017)

Dear ep1 red VCIS parents and guardians,

Today the children in ep1 red here at Varee Chiangmai International School completed their end of year STEM project.

The project was based around designing fabricating and testing a kite.

  1. Initially the children brainstormed with the teacher and with each other as to what qualities and types of materials would be needed in creating a kite, along with other factors such as the shape and the forces involved in flying it.

2. The children then went on to draw their own kite designs, listing the materials they would require and their quantities.

3. Finally the children created their kites. The problems one individual or group of children encountered during the creating process were shared with the class. This way the children were learning and amending their plans as they created their designs.

Being able to evaluate and modify concepts is a key skill employed in STEM and I was extremely proud of all of my class.

4. Today the children were able to test out and play with their kites.

After this the children went back to the classroom to discuss and brainstorm what they could have done to make their kites even better, what problems they encountered during the creating process and what they would like to do their next STEM project on.

An extremely successful ESL STEM project which really benefited the children’s learning in a multitude of ways.

EP1 Red Independent Creative Writing Family Biographies (January 2017)

Dear ep1 red VCIS parents and guardians,

Below are images of first drafts of independent creative writing centred upon the topic of family, produced by the pupils of ep1 red, here at Varee Chiangmai International School.

Only major grammatical and major spelling errors have been highlighted and of course fed back to the children, whom then went on to create finalised versions.

Again I must mention that the children were not helped in anyway. Also they did not refer to any external sources for the spellings of the words written and what they have produced is from their hearts and own imaginations.

I am so incredibly proud of my pupils as the majority of them entered into ep1 red with no English, writing reading or indeed speaking abilities.



Over these years it has been an honour and privilege to have been the English, Science, Maths, Career and Technology, Information Technology, Social Sciences, Health and Art teacher to six consecutive classes of 5 to 6 year olds. This of course does not exclude how I feel about my 2 and a half years directly before this as a kindergarten and pre-kindergarten teacher.

I have undeniably the best job in the world and the ep1 red blog has been created to share these memories with you, my pupils and indeed myself!



There are only six weeks of learning left for the pupils of ep1 and I sincerely and humbly hope that you have seen the great advancements made by your children over this academic year.

EP1 Red Science Stained Glass Windows (December 2016)

Dear ep1 Red VCIS parents and guardians,

Today the children of ep1 red, here at Varee Chiangmai International School, created beautiful representations of stained glass windows.

This activity was to complement the children’s learning in Science about different materials.

In this case the children’s final Science topic was on glass.

The children first drew something which was important to them, in a very simple uncomplicated style.

They then created the stained glass ‘effect’ around their creations.

Ep1 Red Semi Symmetrical Art Class (November 2016)

Dear ep1 Red VCIS parents and guardians,

This year has been the first year out of my six years as an ep1 homeroom teacher, here at Varee Chiangmai International School, that I have not taught Art to my pupils.

This being the case, I thought it would be a great shame for my pupils to miss out this year, so the children of ep1 red have used a few moments daily, out of their homeroom periods, to produce absolutely splendid pieces of semi-symmetrical art.

This has been my only taught art lesson this year for my pupils, however I hope that next academic year I will be able to teach this subject all year round, as I enjoy it immensely!!!

My pupils are extremely talented and I am extremely proud of all of their successes in EP1 red.

Outside Our Classroom EP1 Red (November 2016)

Dear ep1 red parents and guardians,

The children of ep1 red here at Varee Chiangmai International School, have worked exceptionally hard all year learning new concepts, skills grammar and vocabulary.

Please feel free to see what the children have produced, by viewing their best works outside of our classroom.

The majority of children who entered English programme 1 red in May 2016, had no understanding of the English language however, by working hard with one another they have all now become very capable pupils.

I hope that you are seeing your child’s English language development, developing more and more, as each day passes, because I certainly am!!!

I am extremely proud of all of the pupils in my class.

This will be my 6th consecutive class of outstanding ep1 pupils!!

Introductory Integrated Maths and Science Class on Shapes (October 2016)

Dear VCIS ep1 Red parents and guardians,

Next week the ep1 children here at Varee Chiangmai International School will start to learn about shapes in Maths.

Today the children had an introductory lesson on shapes by using tangrams to create various animals.

A tangram is essentially a puzzle consisting of 7 shapes.

These shapes can then be used to create a multitude of animals and objects.

1. Firstly the children were given a tangram template to colour in.

2. They then cut out the 7 shapes a tangram consists of.

3. The children watched various mini videos on how to create different animals and composed them using the mini-whiteboards as a ‘canvas’.

4. The children then chose one animal they liked and stuck them onto their worksheets.

5. Finally the children wrote simple informative sentences about their animals relating to whether it was a mammal or a bird.

This is an example of integrated learning in the classroom.

The children are applying what they learned in Science (mammals and birds) and indeed Health (body parts) last term, to complement their learning in an entirely different subject this term. In this case Mathematics.

EP1 Red Compass Rose and Birds (August 2016)

Dear VCIS ep1 Red parents and guardians,

Currently in Social the ep1 children here at Varee Chiangmai International School, are learning about Maps and Compass Directions.

* In this activity the children first created a compass directions key.

** They then cut and pasted an empty Compass Rose into their notebooks.

*** Finally the children used their compass directions key to fill in their Compass Rose with the short form and full form of the directions.

BIRDS (SCIENCE)

In science the ep1 children are learning about birds and their unique characteristics.

The images below show the children composing simple sentences.

* Initially the children completed a birds worksheet where they used a word box to write the correct bird name under the corresponding bird image.

** Next the children cut the bird images from their worksheets and stuck them into their notebooks.

*** Finally the children referred to the bird names they had already written on thier worksheets to compose correct sentences in their notebook.

EP1 Red Independent Story Map Activity (August 2016)

Dear VCIS ep1 Red parents and guardians,

Today the children here at Varee Chiangmai International School, created a story map.

* The children were given 6 randomly ordered sentences from their current reading book.

** The children had to independently work out the order sequence of the sentences by referring to their reading books.

*** On the story map worksheet the children firstly wrote the page number and then the sentence.

**** Finally they then went on to draw the correct page illustration and then to go on to colour it.

This activity is one of many to create greater understanding of new texts.

I am extremely proud of all of my pupils especially, since it is has only been 13 weeks since they all started on the English programme, here at Varee Chiangmai School.

EP1 Red Last Day of Varee Chiangmai International School EP Summer Camp 2016

Dear ep1 red VCIS parents and guardians,

Today was the very last day of Varee Chiangmai International School EP Summer Camp 2016.

All of the children have taken home what they have created during these last 4 weeks.


On Tuesday the 19th of May the ep1 children went to the cinema to watch Kung Fu Panda 3.

Upon their return the children then produced, a beautiful comic strip depicting what they had watched.

They also produced some Kung Fu Panda 3 paper baubles which, will certainly be used to decorate our classroom Christmas  trees in December!
